Sigiya Sonke goes to the Ballet

On Saturday 5th Sept, the Sigiya Sonke dancers went to see one of the best Contemporary Dance Companies in the world, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater from New York.

Alvin Ailey Dance Theater

The last time the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater toured South Africa was in 1995.
For 20 years, Jack has been telling his students about this dance company. At that time Jack and his group performed a traditional dance piece to welcome the company at the Civic Theater in Johannesburg. He and his students were then invited to watch the Alvin Aliley dancers perform. It was this performance which inspired his dancers to pursue dancing to the high standard which eventually took them to compete in Prague and which Zenzele (Jack’s son), at that time only 11 years old, became determined to become a professional dancer!

This younger generation of Sigiya Sonke dancers will now have their own story to tell, and hopefully have all been equally inspired to pursue their passion and dreams of dance.

Organised by UK trustee Vivien Hunt, and coordinated with Jack and Beauty the directors of Sigiya Sonke, the kids had been told the bus would leave at 12:15 sharp. What a surprise then that the kids started arriving at the Dance Warehouse from 8:30am! On this very rainy Saturday morning, with the exception of one illness, every single child showed up, and the group of 60 boarded the double decker bus to go to the Montecasino Teatro in Fourways, Johannesburg.

You cannot imagine the excitement!!!

For many this was the first time to see a professional show, let alone be in a theatre.

The kids were incredibly well behaved and sat captivated throughout the show. The power, strength and grace of the dancers was surreal. A life changing performance is not an understatement.

This outing was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Showtime Management and Metrobus and thanks to Vivien Hunt who had the vision for this event, organised the tickets and went out and hired us a double decker bus!

We are sincerely grateful for this experience. Thank you from all the Sigiya Sonke Dancers!
